It has been three years in the making but I finally harvested my first spring turkey with a bow and to top it with a recurve. It was May 4, 2011, and the weather was awful. If it wasn't for my blind I was sitting in I probably would have been still under the covers. You can't kill a turkey from the bed so I ventured out into the down pour and to my spot on the edge of a cut cornfield. Once the blind was set I nocked an Easton Axis arrow tipped with a Phantom 125 grain head. On the back end was a Fred Eichler wrap and pink feathers. (If it works for Fred it certainly works for me.)
I sat there for an hour after day break until a group of six jakes and a tom came into the field. With two hen decoys out they still wanted nothing to do with me. I attempted to lure them in with some soft calling but they continued to feed about 75 yards out. I had to be at work by nine so I decided to get aggressive with my calling. Either this would have scared them into the next county or get them fired up so I hammered on a mouth call with some aggressive cuts. All six of the jakes heads popped up and they came running in like little troopers. When they got to about fifteen yards I decided it was time. I drew my arrow back and picked a spot. WHAM! I nailed the closest jake directly in the wing. It did a back flip and flopped once. I had done it... finally my quest for a spring turkey had been filled. It ended up being a 16 pound jake with a 4 inch beard. This hunt reminded me of the one Fred had in Georgia for is first Eastern.... Thanks so much for a great product and I continue to tip my arrows with only Muzzy broadheads!
